Studley wood G.C.

Sleeper bunkering - Green 12

It had been hoped to develop the site at Studley Wood in the manner of the Berkshire golf course with six par 4 holes, six par 5 holes and six par 3 holes. This proved more difficult than expected and it was agreed that, rather than force the layout onto the site, it would be better to amend the course and to include for five par 5 holes and four par 3 holes. But what great holes they make. The course is situated on clay - indeed one of the advantages to the development from the point of view of the local authorities was that the site would be properly drained thus saving the many oak trees which were beginning to die back because of annual waterlogging . 5 new lakes were constructed to further improve drainage all of which come strategically into play.

When the course first opened, Fore magazine wrote; "You suspect the course is going to be a cracker from the quality of the practice putting green… Studley wood has a European Tour venue feel" and in its summing up referred to it as a "cracking course".
