The Blackwood Golf Course(s)

Created for the Marchioness of Dufferin and Ava, the 36 hole golf course at Bangor, Northern Ireland constitutes an 18 hole main course, an 18 hole par 3 course and a floodlit driving range.

The Marchioness herself is a very good golfer and was keen to support golf in Northern Ireland and felt a 36 hole public course the most appropriate means of aiding golf in the province. The course has many mature beech trees most of which were incorporated into the design. In terms of elevation the course varies from the high somewhat rocky section to the south to the more low lying areas to the north. There is thus a combination of holes, some on the higher ground a little exposed , others in the lower part that are surrounded by trees, lakes and mounding.

Blackwood Course Layout (section)

The par 3 course has similar contrasts winding its way through mature woodland and open countryside. The concept of a driving range, par 3 course and an 18 hole course was first developed by Burhill Estates as a means of progressing golfers from starting the game on the par 3 course to a reasonable level of ability on the main course. The Marchioness has family links with Burhill Estates.
