Simon Gidman's long experience with golf began in 1971 when he served as an assistant professional at Gerrards Cross GC, Sandy Lodge GC, Crowborough Beacon GC and Sonning GC. During his time as a professional golfer he developed an interest in golf course architecture and, keen to further his knowledge of design generally, studied Landscape Architecture at Leeds Metropolitan University, graduating in 1982.

In 1983 he joined Hawtree’s where he was involved in a number of golf course projects throughout the world.
